What is Gemini?
Gemini started life as Bard in March 2023 and was renamed Gemini in February 2024. Google has since been replacing Google Assistant with Gemini across phones, smart speakers and displays; the Google Home Speaker, released in June 2026, was designed around it.
Gemini is multimodal: it can reason over text, images, audio, video and files, and connects to Google services such as Gmail, Docs, Maps and YouTube.
The Gemini app has a free tier. Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscriptions add higher limits on models such as Gemini 3.1 Pro; since Google I/O 2026, AI Ultra starts at $100 a month.
