Claude vs Gemini: which AI assistant should you choose?

Claude and Gemini are often compared by people who have already tried ChatGPT and want a second opinion. They take different routes to being useful. Claude, from Anthropic, focuses on doing text-heavy and technical work carefully. Gemini, from Google, focuses on being everywhere you already are: Gmail, Docs, Chrome, Android and Google Home.

Writing and editing

Both produce fluent first drafts. The gap shows when instructions get detailed. Claude tends to follow a style guide closely, keep a consistent voice through long pieces and make careful line edits — useful for reports, proposals and anything that will be read closely.

Gemini is most convenient when the text already lives in Google’s apps. With Google Workspace smart features turned on, you can ask it to summarise a Gmail thread or draft a reply inside Gmail, or work on a Google Doc without copying anything into a separate window.

Long documents and research

Claude is comfortable with long contracts, transcripts and research papers, and projects let you keep reference files alongside instructions so every chat starts with the right context. Gemini handles large files too and can draw on your Drive when you allow it.

Both run in-depth research that reads many web pages and returns a report with sources — Research in Claude on paid plans, and Deep Research in Gemini, which is available on the free tier. Check the cited pages before you reuse any numbers.

Coding

This is where the choice gets concrete. Claude Code, included from the $20 Claude Pro plan, works in your terminal and IDE, reads your repository and makes changes across files. Google’s answer is Antigravity, its agentic development platform. If you used Gemini CLI, note that Google replaced it with Antigravity CLI on June 18, 2026.

Developers who live in the terminal often prefer Claude Code; teams already standardised on Google Cloud may find Antigravity the easier fit. The only reliable test is a real task in your own codebase.

Images, video and everyday extras

Gemini is the broader creative package: it generates and edits images on the free tier, and paid Google AI plans add credits for video creation in Google Flow plus extra cloud storage. Claude reads images and documents well, but its focus is text, analysis and code rather than media generation.

Your phone and home

On Android, Google began replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on eligible phones in September 2026, and Gemini for Home runs on Google’s smart speakers. Claude has apps for iPhone and Android but isn’t a phone-wide or smart-speaker assistant. If a hands-free assistant matters to you, Gemini has the edge.

Price

The main plans cost the same in practice: Claude Pro is $20 a month ($17 billed annually) and Google AI Pro is $19.99. Google also sells Google AI Plus at $4.99 for lighter use. For heavy daily use, Claude Max starts at $100 a month, and Google AI Ultra costs $99.99 or $199.99.

Organisations can choose Claude Team or Enterprise, or Gemini through Google Workspace — usually decided by which tools the company already runs on.

Which should you choose?

Choose Claude if your work is writing, analysis of long documents or software development, and you want an assistant that follows detailed instructions closely. Choose Gemini if your email, files and phone are Google’s, or you want image and video tools bundled with storage.
