ChatGPT is a standalone assistant that runs the same way everywhere.

Everyday answers and writing

For emails, summaries, explanations and first drafts, the two are close, and both improve when you give them context and an example of what you want. The practical difference is where that context comes from.

Gemini can work with what is already in your Google account. With Google Workspace smart features switched on, it can summarise a long Gmail thread, draft a reply or pull details from a Google Doc without you copying anything across.

Both offer natural voice conversations: Gemini Live and ChatGPT’s voice mode. On Android, Gemini goes further: Google began replacing Google Assistant with Gemini on eligible phones in September 2026, so it becomes the assistant you reach from the power button and “Hey Google”. On iPhone, ChatGPT can be turned on as an optional extension that Siri can hand requests to on Apple Intelligence devices.

OpenAI paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the $200 Pro tier on September 10, 2026, so check availability before planning around it.

For most people the comparison that matters is Google AI Pro at $19.99 against ChatGPT Plus at $20 — effectively the same price, so choose on fit rather than cost.

Privacy controls

Both let you limit what is kept. In Gemini, you can turn off Gemini Apps Activity; Google still keeps conversations for up to 72 hours to provide the service. In ChatGPT, data controls let you stop your conversations being used to improve OpenAI’s models. For confidential work, use a business plan with admin controls rather than a personal account.

Which should you choose?

If your day runs on Gmail, Google Docs and an Android phone, choose Gemini — it will save you the most clicks. If you want an assistant that works the same on every device and connects to the tools you pick, choose ChatGPT.
