ChatGPT Go vs Plus: what's the difference and which plan is worth it?

ChatGPT Go and ChatGPT Plus are OpenAI’s two lower-cost plans for individuals. Go costs $8 a month in the US and Plus costs $20. Both give you unlimited everyday text chats, so the $12 difference isn’t about how much you can talk to ChatGPT — it buys a stronger model, more room for research and coding, and a few professional tools.

What you get with ChatGPT Go

Go is built for people who use ChatGPT regularly but don’t need its most advanced tools. Compared with the free plan, you get more messages with tools, more file uploads, more image creation, more voice chats and longer memory, so ChatGPT remembers more about you and your earlier conversations.

• Model: GPT-5.6 Luna, OpenAI’s fastest model, answers your everyday chats. For harder questions, choose Think, which also uses GPT-5.6 Luna.
• Tools: file uploads, data analysis, image generation, voice with video, projects, scheduled tasks and the ability to create and share custom GPTs.
• Limited access: deep research, Codex and ChatGPT Work on the desktop app, with lower limits than Plus.
• Not included: GPT-5.6 Sol, GPT-6 Astra and legacy models.

OpenAI says Go may include ads. According to OpenAI, ads are labelled, appear separately from the answer and don’t influence what ChatGPT tells you, and you can turn off ad personalisation.

What ChatGPT Plus adds

A stronger model with adjustable thinking

The biggest upgrade is the model. On Plus, GPT-5.6 Sol — OpenAI’s flagship GPT-5.6 model for coding, research and complex work — powers Instant replies, and a thinking slider lets you choose Medium or High thinking for harder problems. Plus doesn’t include the Extra High or Pro options, which need a Pro plan.

Plus also includes GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI’s most capable model, in ChatGPT Work and Codex, as well as older legacy models if you prefer them for certain tasks.

More room for research, coding and agents

• Deep research: expanded use of deep research, which reads many sources and writes a structured, cited report.
• Codex: more usage of OpenAI’s coding agent, with GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra and Luna. Go users get limited Codex use with GPT-5.6 Terra.
• ChatGPT Work: OpenAI’s agent for multi-step projects on the desktop, web and mobile apps, instead of the desktop app only.
• Office extensions: full access to the ChatGPT extensions for Excel, PowerPoint and Google Sheets.

The extras

Plus adds image generation with Thinking for more complex and accurate pictures, interactive tables and charts, Sites, developer mode (beta), record mode and apps that connect to internal tools. You also get early access to new features, faster responses and priority access when ChatGPT is busy. And Plus doesn’t show ads.

Which plan should you choose?

Choose ChatGPT Go if you use ChatGPT for everyday questions, writing help, planning, studying and making images, and you keep hitting the free plan’s limits. At $8 a month it is the cheapest way to get more uploads, images and memory.

Choose ChatGPT Plus if you code, analyse data, write long research reports or work through complex problems. GPT-5.6 Sol with adjustable thinking makes a real difference on hard tasks, and expanded deep research, Codex and ChatGPT Work are the tools most professionals rely on. Plus is also the cheapest plan without ads.

Consider ChatGPT Pro if you hit Plus limits every day. Pro costs $100 a month for 5 times the usage of Plus, or $200 for 20 times, and adds GPT-6 Pro in chat. OpenAI paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the $200 tier on September 10, 2026; the $100 tier isn’t affected.

How to upgrade or switch plans

To upgrade:

1. Sign in to ChatGPT and click your profile icon.
2. Choose Upgrade plan.
3. Select Go or Plus and follow the payment steps.

To move from Plus to Go, or cancel:

1. Click your profile icon, then Settings.
2. Open Account and manage your subscription.
3. Choose the new plan. Your current plan stays active until the end of the billing cycle, then switches.

If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, a new plan can take a few minutes to appear in the app; restart the app if it doesn’t show up.

Things to know before you pay

• Monthly billing only. There is no annual discount for Go, Plus or Pro.
• API use isn’t included. Developers pay for the OpenAI API separately.
• Limits still apply. Every plan has usage limits and abuse safeguards, and limits can tighten temporarily when demand is high.
