ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: which is best for you?
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini compared on writing, research, coding, multimodal features, integrations and price, with a clear pick for each type of user.
The short answer
Choose ChatGPT if you want a capable all-rounder with image generation, voice and agents. Choose Claude if you work with long documents, careful writing or code. Choose Gemini if you rely on Gmail, Docs and Android. All three have free tiers, so test the same real task in each before paying for one.
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are the three general-purpose AI assistants most people choose between. They overlap heavily — all three write, summarise, search the web, analyse files and help with code — so the differences that matter are in focus, integrations and price.

Writing and editing
All three produce fluent drafts. Claude tends to be the most careful editor: it follows detailed style instructions closely and holds the thread of long documents well. ChatGPT is quick and versatile across formats, from emails to scripts. Gemini is most convenient when the text lives in Gmail or Google Docs, because you can draft without switching apps.
Research and current information
Each assistant can search the web and cite sources. ChatGPT and Claude both offer research modes that investigate a question across many pages and return a structured report. Gemini adds Google’s own services, such as Maps and YouTube, which helps with local and video-based questions. Whichever you use, open the cited sources before relying on an answer.
Coding
For quick snippets and explanations, the three are close. For real projects, the dedicated tools matter more than the chat window: Claude Code runs in the terminal and IDE and is included from Claude Pro upwards; OpenAI’s Codex is available to ChatGPT subscribers; Google offers Gemini-based developer tools. Try each on a task in your own repository.
Images, voice and video
ChatGPT has built-in image generation and a mature voice mode. Gemini is the most multimodal of the three, reasoning over text, images, audio and video, and ties into Android’s camera and screen. Claude reads images and documents well but is more focused on text-based work.
Integrations and ecosystem
- Gemini is the natural pick if you use Gmail, Docs, Drive and an Android phone.
- ChatGPT runs on every major platform, including dedicated macOS and Windows apps, and works with a wide range of connected apps.
- Claude connects to tools such as Microsoft 365 on paid plans and is available through Anthropic’s API and major cloud platforms.
Price
All three have free tiers with usage limits. The main individual plans cost about the same: ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are $20 a month in the US, and Google AI Pro is Google’s equivalent. For heavy daily use, Claude Max and Google AI Ultra start at $100 a month, and ChatGPT Pro sits at the top of OpenAI’s range.
Which should you choose?
- Choose ChatGPT if you want one assistant that does a bit of everything well, including images and voice.
- Choose Claude if your work is long documents, precise writing or software development.
- Choose Gemini if your day runs on Google’s apps or an Android phone.
