Perplexity and ChatGPT overlap more every year: both search the web, both write, both run long research tasks and both now have agents. But they start from opposite ends. Perplexity is an answer engine — you ask a question, it reads the web and gives you a sourced answer. ChatGPT is a general-purpose assistant that also searches. So the real question is whether you mostly look things up or mostly make things.
Research and citations
This is Perplexity’s home ground. Every answer comes with inline citations, so you can see which page each claim came from and open it in one tap. That makes it quick to check a statistic, compare reviews before a purchase or get up to speed on a news story. Pro and Max subscribers also get premium data sources, such as Statista and PitchBook, which matter if you research markets or companies.
ChatGPT searches the web when a question needs current information and links to the pages it used, but its answers read more like a conversation than a list of findings. For longer questions, both run multi-step research that reads many pages and returns a structured report: Deep Research in Perplexity and deep research in ChatGPT, which is limited on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans.
Whichever you use, open the sources for anything you plan to rely on. An AI can still misread a page or quote an out-of-date one.
One model family or several
ChatGPT runs on OpenAI’s own models. Free and Go use GPT-5.6 Luna, Plus adds GPT-5.6 Sol with adjustable thinking levels, and Pro adds GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra.
Perplexity is model-agnostic. It chooses a model for each question from several providers — including OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and NVIDIA — and Pro and Max subscribers can set a preferred model. Writing, images and everyday help
For emails, essays, rewrites, brainstorming and conversations that build over days, ChatGPT is the stronger tool. Memory, projects and custom GPTs let it keep your context and preferences, it generates and edits images inside the chat, and its voice mode can also use your camera on paid plans.
Perplexity can draft and summarise too, and its paid plans create documents, apps, images and video. But it is at its best when the task starts with finding information. Agents and browsing
Both now go beyond answers. Perplexity Computer, introduced in February 2026, takes a goal, splits it into tasks and works through them in its own environment with a browser, files and connected apps. It is included with Pro and Max. Perplexity also makes Comet, a free AI browser for Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android whose assistant researches as you browse.
ChatGPT Work is OpenAI’s agent for longer, multi-step jobs: it can research, analyse files and produce documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and it connects to the tools you already use. It is limited to the desktop app on Free and Go, and available on desktop, web and mobile from Plus.

The free plans are useful for trying each one, but they suit different habits. Perplexity’s free plan answers questions with citations, with limited daily usage. ChatGPT’s free plan gives unlimited everyday text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna, with limits on uploads, images and deep research.
